Light Snow, and 33 °F | Feb 26th: No School

Friday, October 27, 2017

Dear Families,

The weather certainly has changed throughout this week. One day we have hot sunny weather, and another cold and rainy. Overall it is beginning to feel like fall is finally here.

All of our Kindergarten through 3rd grade students doing are doing word work using a program called Fundations this year. Fundations is a multisensory, structured language program that provides research based strategies that are essential for students to become lifelong readers. Some of the critical foundational skills they learn are:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics/ word study
  • High frequency word study
  • Reading fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension strategies
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling

If you have students in K, 1, 2, or 3rd grades, ask them about the word work they do each day.  When you read with your child at night, ask them “I wonder” questions about the story as you read. You can also help them expand their vocabulary. For instance, if they say the dog is scared, you can reply with yes the dog is frightened. You can also ask them open ended questions such as “What is the dog doing?” instead of “Is the dog barking?”. Using these strategies with your student(s) helps to build their oral skills, which in turns helps them develop as a reader!

Have a wonderful weekend.
