The cold has really impacted our students’ access to recess these days. If the temperature is below 10 degrees, with the wind chill factored in, then the students stay inside for recess. We use the “feels like” temperature, not the actual temperature. We have talked to the students about the cold and keeping them warm and safe. Most of the students understand this, but some of them are having a difficult time with this school rule. Any conversations you could have at home supporting this school rule would be appreciated. If your student needs a hat, mittens, boots, snow pants, or a jacket, please contact the classroom teacher and let them know.
Our Winter Transportation Pilot will begin next Tuesday, January 16th for students who live 3/4 of a mile or more away from school. It will run from January 16th through March 30th. There will be 2 buses, doing 2 runs each, at 2 different pick-up locations. The bus stops will be at: O’Brien Community Center (OCC): 2 pickups-7:15 & 7:45 and Elm Street: 2 pickups-7:15 & 7:45. In order to ensure that the winter transportation program is successful, Parents & Youth for Change are recruiting bus monitors to help with managing safe behavior for students while waiting and riding on the bus. For more information about how you can help, please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org Please review the expectations attached to this letter with your students prior to next Tuesday and revisit at least weekly during Jan, Feb & March.
On January 22nd, WOKO will be coming to our All School Assembly at JFK to kick off our Big Change Roundup event. This year, JFK will be running a T-Rex contest to raise money for the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital through the Big Change Roundup. Starting January 25th, there will be jars in the front office with staff members names on them. The staff member that raises the most money by February 21st has agreed to wear a T-Rex outfit for a day. There will be an All School Assembly on February 23rd to reveal the “winner”. All of the money raised supports patients and families at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. The children at UVM Children’s Hospital are more than just patients. They are our family, friends, neighbors, classmates, and a huge part of our community. Start saving your spare change to send into school with your student(s)!
The December Shout Out Award winner is Elizabeth Wood. She was nominated for showing HEART while teaching, for being timely when picking students up for ELL, for being engaged with she helped students focus on work, appropriate while racing students, and responsible for helping students with their work. Students and staff can fill out a Shout Out Award for any adult at JFK. At the end of each month, all of the nominations are taken out, and the JFK Leadership team chooses one randomly. Do you know an adult at school you want to recognize? Stop by and fill out a nomination form. They are next to the Heart Monitor by the JFK Office.
