Dear Families,

It has been another fantastic week at JFK. 5th graders have been participating in the Starbase program. The mission of the program is “to raise the interest and improve the knowledge and skills of youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Specifically, students focus on fields of physics, chemistry, robotics, navigation, math applications, Computer Aided Design and the Engineering Design Process. These fields are critical to the success of students nationally. Young Vermonters are ready to make a connection between what they are learning and how to achieve the career of their dreams. STARBASE provides an exciting activity-based curriculum involving hands-on STEM, team building, and healthy decision making.” The student launched their rockets at school this week. It was pretty amazing!

This morning WOKO came to our All School Morning Meeting to kick off our Big Change Roundup event. This year, JFK will be running a T-Rex contest to raise money for the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital through the Big Change Roundup. Starting January 26th, there will be jars in the front office with staff members names on them. The staff member that raises the most money by February 21st has agreed to wear a T-Rex outfit for a day. There will be an All School Morning Meeting on February 23rd to reveal the “winner”. All of the money raised supports patients and families at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. The children at UVM Children’s Hospital are more than just patients. They are our family, friends, neighbors, classmates, and a huge part of our community. Start saving your spare change to send to school with your student(s)!

Sarah Murphy and I have been working with Beth Wallace towards re-opening the JFK Everybody Wins! site next year. Everybody Wins! Works with schools to match students with a mentor. The student and mentor have lunch together once a week and read together. This is a program that will be open to all students in Winooski. DJ Craig Mitchell, who graciously read stories for Everybody Wins!  at Barnes & Noble in December, is excited by the possible Winooski site and has arranged for Everybody Wins! to be the beneficiary of brunch at Waterworks on Saturday, February 3rd from 11:30 to 2 pm. Craig would like to end the brunch with a storytime for children. Flyers are being sent home today.

Have a great weekend
