Light Rain, and 41 °F | Oct 24th: Green Day

9/23/16 Friday Letter

Dear Families,

The fourth week has been just as busy and productive as the first three.

This week was our bi-annual Scholastic Book Fair. Twice a year, our students have a chance to buy high quality books at affordable prices. As always, the book fair was successful!

Each class is in the process of learning about and reviewing expectations for each space at JFK:

  • Classroom
  • Lunchroom
  • Hallway
  • Bathroom
  • Front Office
  • Clear The Halls
  • Egress (fire drill)
  • Lockers
  • Playground
  • School grounds
  • Bus (for field trips)
  • Classroom
  • Health Office
  • PAC/Assemblies
  • Cafeteria

This past week, we had our first egress drill (fire drill). It was, by far, the best egress drill that I have ever seen. Students and staff left the building silently and quickly. Everyone was silent while outside and entered the building silently. The building was clear and all students accounted for in under five minutes. Students knew what was expected beforehand, and did a fantastic job!

We are having to re-review bathroom expectations with students. The boy’s bathrooms for the 1st – 5th-grade students have been deliberately flooded several times in the past two weeks. Boys are clogging the toilets or urinals with paper towels and flooding the bathroom. I would appreciate families having conversations with their student(s) about this. It is important that students know that these actions mean extra work for adults, and close the bathroom until the mess can be cleaned up, which ¬†inconveniences their peers. ¬†While only a few students are responsible for the mess, this is a great opportunity to talk to your student(s) about language they can use with peers, or how to talk to an adult. We will continue to talk to students at school about expectations.

It has been an amazing start to the school year. Thank you f0r all of your support as begin the new year.

Have a great weekend!
