Friday September 2, 2016 Family Letter

Friday September 2, 2016

Dear Families,

Welcome to the end of a great first week. It has been such an amazing start to the new school year!

There have been wonderful activities happening throughout the school this week. Our students came in excited to be back with us, and the staff was equally excited! Ask your students about building walks, location specific expectations (hallway, bathroom, etc), and the JFK dance party!

As a school, we will be doing the First Six Weeks of School as part of Responsive Classroom. The goal of the First Six Weeks is to establish expectations using positive teacher language, get students excited about academics, and teaching routines in a collaborative classroom community setting. Go to to learn more.

Thank you to all of the students and families who have been so wonderful with our new entry plan. Adults are, as always, welcome to walk their students to their classrooms in the morning. The plan to have everyone enter through the main lobby was developed with input from local law enforcement and is based on making the school safe for all students. In addition, we highly encourage our parents to volunteer in classrooms or to come have lunch with your student(s). Our new entry plan does not change that. The only change for that is that people have to come to the main lobby to sign in and get a visitor’s tag.

In the afternoon, the only change is for early dismissal. If you have to pick up your child between 2:30 and 2:55, your student will be called from the main lobby to meet you. The practice of calling students to meet the adult picking them up is the same as last year. We began this last year to minimize disruptions for the rest of the students in the class.

Dismissal is at 3:00 each day. At 3:00, kindergarten students are dismissed in the main lobby. 1st – 5th graders will come out through the JFK exit to meet their adults outside. We value the time that your students spend learning everyday, and believe that everyone staying until 3:00 everyday is vital.

As a school and staff we are very excited for a great school year, working with you and your student(s). My door is always open. I welcome families to come say hello, or come and talk to me about any questions, concerns, or wonderful things you see or hear.  Students are more successful when we all work together as a team to support them, and keep the communication open.

Have a fantastic long weekend. We will see everyone on Tuesday, September 6th.
